Use Dropbox to Sync Tomboy Notes

June 26th, 2009 | 4 Comments

Dropbox has really done a lot for me in terms of making managing files across multiple machines actually workable. One the greatest things about this cool app is that it makes it fairly simple to sync all your personal information stuff like contacts, calendar info, and notes. Nothing beats having all of your notes instantly available on and offline on all of your machines. It comes pretty close to pure bliss for me, actually.

I’m using Dropbox to sync my Zim Wiki notes, but tech blog Starry Hope gives us the low down on how to best use Dropbox for all you Tomboy users out there. Looks really simple, and I bet you could do something similar with the private-beta Ubuntu One, too.

  1. You said that you are using dropbox to sync your Zim Wiki notes. Could you elaborate more on how you did it?? It would be helpful to have all the steps!! Thanks

  2. @Suhail All I did was put my notes directory in my Dropbox folder. On each of my machines, I just make that folder the default notebook in the notebooks dialog (find it by pressing Ctrl + O). Let us know how it works for you!

  3. Thanks. I have got it working.

Do you know how I can create a tree file structure in the index of my ZIm wiki. For example I have a Notebook labelled “Personal” and in it I would like to have a note called “Finances” with “Card Card”,”Assets” and “Debts” as sub notes (ie they are linked to Finances and below it like a branch)

    Any help will be appreciated!!

    Regards.

  4. @Suhail Open the sidebar if it isn’t open already, and right click on the “parent” page. Select “New Page” and you will be prompted to create the child page. You can also do this inline by typing the name in colons. For instance, suppose I had an existing page called “Parent” and I wanted to create a sub-page called “Child” I could create this automatically with a link by typing “:Parent:Child:” (sans quotes, of course). Click on the auto-created the link, and you’ll be taken to your new page!
