How to Sync Mozilla Sunbird with Google Calendar

I love it when they add new features!

I love it when they add new features!

I noticed a new announcement in that familiar red font when using Google Calendar today. Looks like synchronization with Mozilla Sunbird is now officially supported! I know there have been ways of syncing the two around for quite some time, but it’s always nice get it all officially and (hopefully) flawless. Here’s what you need to do get it working (copy and pasted from Google’s help pages):

Only Mozilla Sunbird 0.8+ supports CalDAV sync.

To set up CalDAV support for Google Calendar in Mozilla Sunbird, follow these steps:
1. Open the Sunbird application and select File > New Calendar.
2. Select On the Network and click Next.
3. Select the CalDAV format option.
4. In the Location field, enter [ https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/ [ your Google Calendar email address ] /events ] and click Next.

For example, if the email address used to access your Google Calendar is calendarfriend@gmail.com, the Location field should contain https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/calendarfriend@gmail.com/events
Be sure to use https in your URL, as an http address will not work.

5. Enter a name and select a color for your calendar.
6. Deselect the Show Alarms checkbox. (Alarms are not supported at this time.)
7. In the pop-up screen, enter the following information:

Username: This is the complete email address you use with Google Calendar (including the part after the @ sign). If you’re using Google Apps, be sure to enter your Google Apps email address.
Password: This is the password you use to sign in to Google Calendar
8. Click OK.

Your Google Calendar will now appear in the Calendar tab of Mozilla Sunbird, and Sunbird will sync any changes to and from Google Calendar.

I just went through the procedure on my main workstation running Ubuntu Intrepid, and everything seemed to work great!

  3. I found this entry googling for options to sync Sunbird. Thanks for the tip! It seems to work well. But is there an option to save the calendar in Sunbird so that you can view when you’re offline?

  4. I downloaded the Google Calendar add-on from the Mozilla website called the provider for Google calendar. It adds an option “Google Calender” to the calender select screen from where the CalDAV is selected. Does that work in a similar fashion as ur CALDAV tutorial? I mean do we have to enter the credentials in a similar format?

    Thanks anyway..really helpful resource.
