Install Ubuntu Applications Straight From the Web with Appnr.com

November 29th, 2008 | 2 Comments

This may be old news to some of you, but I recently got around to checking out Appnr.com, and I’m pretty impressed. It’s a website for searching and installing the Ubuntu application repositories straight from the web. All the standard repos are listed and up-to-date–even the Google Linux repos.

Appnr boasts a super-clean interface that’s a cinch to use. You can, of course, perform custom searches, or browse packages by category, popularity, and appropriate desktop environment. I actually like using Appnr more than the default Add/Remove Applications in Ubuntu!

Have you used Appnr yet? How do you feel about a web interface for installing applications via apt?

  1. I always envied Linux Mint for its web-based software portal, like the one you mentioned here. It seemed so user friendly when I had a look around it one day. This looks to be just as good. Thanks for the heads-up!

One thing I noticed in particular about Appnr, was the sidebar menu for “Best With: GNOME, KDE, XFCE.” I don’t think I’ve seen that elsewhere, and that could really come in handy for those who don’t know what’s fully intended for their D.E.

Unless the pacakge name is prepended with a ‘K,’ as in KWrite, Kaffeine, Kontact, and so on… which I honestly loathe :)

  2. Yes, I also really like that ability to sort by desktop environment. The whole website is just beautifully simple and easy…

I agree with you that the “K” that seems mandatory in most KDE apps is just ridiculous. It makes me laugh…but I think they’re getting away from that (the new official file manager is called Dolphin, so no “K” in sight!)
