Wired Guide to Building a Linux Box on Cheap
Wired has a guide on their wiki to creating Linux box for under $150 (sans keyboard, monitor, and mouse). What’s really cool is that all the research is done for you, so you just look up the parts, order, and you’re all set–knowing that everything’s Linux ready. Of course, remember that you’re getting a budget computer when you follow this guide…it may not run the latest Compiz-fusion or be your next audio-editing rig, but if you just need an extra workstation for the guest room or secondary computer for your kids, this might do the trick.
I recently picked up a 15 inch CRT for $3 at Goodwill that’s been serving me well until I get my new LCD. If you’re really willing be frugal, you could probably get an entire system (with a used monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers) for under $200.
