Make Your Linux Behave Like a Mac with KDE

April 9th, 2008 | No comments yet...what do you think?

Open Source blog FOSSwire posts on a little known KDE feature: the ability to have global menu bar at the top of your screen, a la Mac OS X. This behavior has always been kind of annoying to me whenever I try to use a Mac, but I thought it might come in handy if that’s what you’re used to at work or at home.

To enable the feature, right-click anywhere on your KDE desktop and choose Configure Desktop. In the resulting window, click Behaviour on the left, then make sure the General tab is selected.
From there, click Current application’s menu bar (Mac OS-style) and click OK. That’s it - to reverse the setting, simply choose None in the same dialogue.

And that’s it! FOSSwire points out that the behavior won’t work for non-KDE apps, like FIrefox…so be warned you may have UI inconsistencies.
